Relaxation Protocol Day 1

After my last post on Dr. Karen Overall's Protocol for Relaxation, I wanted to further my demonstration.  I have started with Marty in a down position on his mat, in order to show others how it can help relax your dog.  He works this exercise for his kibble, one piece each time that is dropped on his mat in between his feet.  I make sure to keep my hands in a neutral position at my side, instead of in my pocket or treat bag.  I still struggle with this sometimes but, it is very important for your dog not to learn to watch your hand.
Very simple really and keeps this exercise as hands off as possible which is very helpful for shy, fearful, or easily excited dogs.  Remember, work your dog up to this slowly by just getting them to increase the duration that they remain in a sit or down position before getting their reward.  I would like you to be able to get at least 10 second duration before starting the relaxation protocol.  If you just can't wait to start (which isn't a bad thing), don't wait as long in between treats or move as far away.  Enjoy... Day 1!
